Ten wrestlers from Bibb and surrounding counties won first-round matches Thursday at the GHSA traditional wrestling championships at the Macon Coliseum.
In Class AAAAA, Jones County’s Daniel Curry scored a pin in his first-round match at 182 pounds, while teammate Torrez Finney advanced with a 14-3 victory at 195 pounds.
A pair of Howard wrestlers, JaQwun Stinson (195) and Greg Pertillo (285), won by pinfall in the first round of Class AAAA competition. Perry’s Derekston Williams (152) and Veterans’ Michael Wilkins (160) also scored victories.
Advancing in Class AAA were Rutland’s Chase Boutwell (132) and Brycen Taylor (182), as well as Westside’s Devante Smith (182) and Southwest’s Dalvin Andrews (195), who scored a pin in his first-round match.
Quarterfinal action in those classes was scheduled for Thursday evening. Class AA and Class A competition is set to begin Friday. The championship round will take place Saturday.
