Darrell White scored 28 points, including 20 in the first half, and Avery Mitchell had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead Peach County to a 71-62 win over Westside in a GHSA Region 2-AAA game Tuesday night.
The Trojans improve 7-1 in the region while Westside drops to 3-4.
“We had lost two straight games, and we knew we had to turn things around against a very good Westside team,” Peach County assistant coach Todd Youngblood said. “We expected a close game because that’s pretty much what you get every time you play a game in this region. This team came out ready to play, and I think we played our best defensive basketball in the second half.”
Peach County led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter, thanks mainly to White, who had 13 points in the quarter, including three 3-pointers. The Trojans stretched their lead to 25-18 early in the second quarter on a basket by White, but Westside quickly responded, outscoring the Trojans 14-5 during the next four minutes to trail only 32-30. Peach County pushed its lead back to six at 36-30, but Chris Daniels hit two straight 3-pointers and had an assist to give the Seminoles a 39-38 lead at the break.
Never miss a local story.
Peach County once again answered in the third quarter, outscoring Westside 13-9 to take a 51-48 lead going into the final quarter but Westside did not back down, getting seven points from freshman Khavon Moore to tie the game at 59. Saire Davis scored inside for the Trojans, and White, who was scoreless in the third quarter, got loose for two quick baskets to take a 65-59 lead with a minute left, forcing Westside to foul. Peach County made six straight free throws to put the game away.
“We had hurt ourselves in the last two games down the stretch by missing free throws, so it was great to see us step up to the line and make them,” Youngblood said. “We have had seven different players score in double figures this year, so we are capable of scoring, but we have to win games with good defense. I think we got a great effort down the stretch from a defensive standpoint.”
Westside was led by Tyler Wheeler and Matt Willis, who both scored 11 points.
The Westside girls overcame a 22-15 deficit at the half to take a 42-35 win. Daisha Terry led the Seminoles (4-3 Region 2-AAA) with 10 points while Alexis Wilson added nine. LaShondria Mallard led Peach County (6-2 Region 2-AAA) with eight points. Peach County played its third straight game without leading scorer Nausia Woolfolk, who is out with a back injury.
