The Rutland boys basketball team claimed an important GHSA Region 2-AAA victory Friday night, defeating Peach County 83-79 in Fort Valley in a meeting of the top two teams in the region.
Ty’lik Evans and Dallas Smith each scored 24 points as the Hurricanes (13-1, 8-0 region) handed Peach County (11-2, 6-1) its first loss in region play.
Avery Mitchell had 23 points and Jared Johnson had 21 in the loss.
Southwest (4-9, 3-4) visits Rutland on Friday in the third meeting between the teams this season. Rutland won 92-79 on Dec. 2 and 82-74 on Dec. 22 in the Middle Georgia Classic. Northeast (5-7), which is coming off a 65-53 win over Southwest in which Santez Kinder scored 44 points, is at Rutland on Saturday in a non-region contest.
Peach County travels to Westside (4-7, 3-3) on Tuesday and hosts Kendrick (6-8, 3-4) on Friday.
Central (8-5, 4-2) is in third in Region 2-AAA. The Chargers travel to Jordan (5-8, 2-4) on Tuesday and host Spencer (4-10, 1-5) on Friday.
Meanwhile, in Region 2-AAA girls play, last year’s GHSA Class AA champion continues to dominate its competition.
Kendrick (15-0, 7-0 region) is averaging 74.5 points per game while allowing just 35.6. In region play, the scoring edge is 79.3-32.1.
Peach County is putting a strong claim on second place. The Trojans (11-1, 5-1) are unbeaten outside of a season-opening loss at Kendrick.
Following a trip to Westside (3-7, 3-3) on Tuesday, Peach County hosts Kendrick on Friday in what likely will be the Trojans’ final chance to challenge for first place. But the challenge will be difficult: Kendrick beat Peach County 85-44 in that season opener.
Rutland (6-5, 5-3) hosts Southwest (8-5, region record unavailable) on Friday and Northeast (4-8) on Saturday.
REGION 4-AA UPDATE
Crawford County (11-3, 3-0) appears to have the upper hand so far in GHSA Region 4-AA boys competition, although very few region games have been played so far.
The Eagles are the only team in the region to have a winning record overall. They host Monticello (4-8, 2-0) on Tuesday that will give the winner sole possession of first place in the region. Crawford County then plays Friday at Northeast (1-1 region), which is at Macon County on Tuesday.
Putnam County (3-11, 2-1) hosts Lamar County (2-8, 0-2) on Tuesday in the War Eagles’ only scheduled game this week.
Putnam County (12-3, 3-0 region) is off to the strongest start among Region 4-AA girls, with Monticello (4-8, 2-0) also unbeaten in region play early on.
Bleckley County (4-5, 2-1) and Northeast (1-1 region) are also among the contenders in early action. Bleckley County’s region loss is to Putnam County, while Northeast’s region loss is to Monticello.
