With two-tenths of a second left in the third quarter, Tattnall Square’s Liz Wainwright took an inbounds pass and drilled the 3-pointer from halfway between the 3-point arc and halfcourt line. It was that kind of third quarter, not to mention game, for the Trojans on Tuesday night against Stratford.
Tattnall blew open a close game early in the third quarter, blanketing the Eagles with a 16-0 run to win 41-21.
“It was shaping up to be a grinder like it usually is against them” Tattnall Square head coach Todd Whetsel said. “But when you score 16 points in a quarter, you’re going to be in good shape.”
The Trojans led 19-16 early in the third following a quick 3-0 run by the Eagles to begin the second half. Tattnall ended that momentum abruptly, finding its offensive groove on the offensive end by getting into position for and making open shots. On the defensive end, the Eagles were bottled up by the Trojans and never got into sync in the third quarter. Jumpers by Kendra Green, Wainwright and Kendall Hardy started the Tattnall scoring stretch, and Tattnall didn’t look back from there.
Hardy’s 13 points led the Trojans and Green had 11.
“We just came together and played as a team,” Hardy said.
Ahead 27-16, Tattnall closed the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers, one by Sierra Rocquemore in addition to Wainwright’s buzzer-beater.
Taylor Reese’s 17 points led Stratford.
“The wheels came off the wagon in the third quarter,” Stratford head coach Ed Smith said. “(Tattnall) came and got us, they played great.”
In the boys game, Stratford turned back a challenge from Tattnall before taking over in the final 1:55 to win 51-44. With the game tied 44-44, the Eagles ended the game on a 7-0 run and held the Trojans 0-of-7 from the field.
Quintez Cephus put the Eagles into the lead for good with 1:37 to play when he scored on a lay-up and single free-throw shot. Douglas Bradley scored with 1:03 to play, making it a two-possession game.
The Eagles scoring stretch came after an 8-0 Tattnall run tied the game with all but two of the points being scored by Aubrien Kemp.
