The GHSA has postponed the start of the state basketball tournament one day to Wednesday, Feb. 19, for girls and Thursday, Feb. 20, for boys due to inclement weather forecasted for the metro Atlanta area Tuesday and Wednesday.
A number of region tournaments will be affected by the weather, as several metro counties have canceled extracurricular activities Tuesday night. The cancellations will cause days to be lost from region tournaments, which determine the state playoff participants from each region.
The adjustment could allow region tournaments to finish as late as Monday. Region tournaments previously had to finish by Saturday.
The GHSA has given regions permission to schedule multiple games for single teams in one day. Regions could also elect not to contest a championship and instead send its four state playoff representatives based on the regular-season finish.
The weather has already affected the Region 2-AAAAA tournament in suburban Augusta.
The schedule called for four games beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Greenbrier. Because of the potential bad weather beginning Tuesday night, the region moved the tournament to two sites, with Evans hosting two games and Greenbrier hosting the other two. The late games at both sites are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., rather than the previously scheduled 8 p.m. late game at Greenbrier.
The Region 2-AAAAA girls games were scheduled for Wednesday at Greenbrier, but they have been moved to Thursday.
Peach County athletics director Chad Campbell said the Region 2-AAA tournament, which will be held in Fort Valley, could alter its schedule if classes are cancelled for the members of the region located in metro Atlanta.
The tournament has a scheduled off day Wednesday, so the tournament could play make-up games then. The championship games, which are set for Friday, could be moved to Saturday, Campbell said.
Henry County, Jackson and Pike County are the northern members of the region.
Region 2-AAAA moved up its tipoff times Tuesday by 30 minutes, with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m. at Rutland.
Region 7-A moved its boys games from Wednesday to Tuesday. Games begin at 3 p.m. at Wilkinson County on Tuesday.
