A pair of Central’s football team captains signed small-college scholarship offers Wednesday.
Running back Jordan Colbert, who rushed for 780 yards and seven touchdowns his senior season, signed with St. Augustine’s in North Carolina. On stage at a signing day ceremony in the school’s auditorium, Colbert said, “I never thought I would get a scholarship. Surprisingly, I got one. When I was here ... we didn’t win that many games.”
Central, 5-25 the past three seasons, has had some recent success sending players on to college. Last year, linebacker Nigel Bowden signed with Vanderbilt.
Darryl “D.J.” Hill, who played safety and linebacker for the Chargers, will likely play safety at Albany State. Hill led Central’s defense in 2013 with 97 tackles. He also had a pair of interceptions.
“I’d like to thank the coaches from Albany State for giving me a chance to play on the next level,” HIll told the Wednesday gathering at Central.
Of Hill and Colbert, Central head coach Jesse Hicks said, “Both of these young men are real special to me. ... These guys will be ready to do a lot of work the next four years out on the football field. But the most important thing is these guys have an understanding that you don’t go just to play football. You go to graduate.”
