With the full opening week of high school football here, little movement occurred in this week’s Georgia Sportswriters Association Prep Football Poll.
Northside remained a strong second in the Class AAAAA poll, 24 points behind No. 1 Gainesville and 20 points ahead of No. 3 Tucker. Warner Robins debuted in the poll at No. 10 after Whitewater, which was ranked ninth, lost to Coffee.
Peach County stayed at No. 4 in the Class AAA poll. The Trojans open up Friday against Perry. Washington County jumped two spots to No. 6. The Golden Hawks’ season opener against Eagle’s Landing Christian was canceled for weather, but WACO led 6-0 when the game was called off in the second quarter following a two-hour weather delay.
Lamar County stayed at No. 3 in Class AA, garnering one first-place vote. The Trojans open this week against Spalding, two weeks after they beat Stone Mountain handily in a scrimmage. Vidalia moved up one spot to No. 8 following a win over West Laurens. Fitzgerald dropped from No. 6 to No. 10 after a loss to Jefferson County.
Wilcox County jumped one spot to No. 6, and Dooly County and Wilkinson County each moved up two spots to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, despite not playing last week. All three jumped ECI, which lost to Metter, and Dooly County and Wilkinson County jumped Savannah Christian, which tied Jenkins.Colquitt County moved into the top spot in Class AAAAAA after beating Grayson 21-6 in the Corky Kell Classic. Previous No. 1 Norcross fell to No. 7 after losing 55-0 to Miami’s Booker T. Washington, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today. North Gwinnett and McEachern both received No. 1 votes in AAAAAA.
Sandy Creek (AAAA) and Buford (AAA) were the only two unanimous No. 1 selections. Calhoun was the top pick in AA, while Eagle's Landing Christian stayed No. 1 in Class A.
