Derick Johnson scored from 2 yards out in the first overtime to give CFCA a 20-14 win over Griffin Christian on Thursday in a game that lasted more than 3-1/2 hours.
Johnson's touchdown came after Ezra Hargrove carried the ball twice for 23 yards to get the Lancers to the 2. Johnson ended the game with 124 yards on the ground, while Hargrove added 105.
Griffin Christian, which entered the game with only 14 players dressed out, controlled the early portions of the game and scored easily on its first possession of the game. It got on the board when quarterback Hayden Kujola connected with Sean Montgomery for a 7-yard score. Montgomery added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
CFCA struggled offensively until its fifth possession when Hargrove got going. He carried the ball four times for 51 yards as the Lancers went 79 yards in 11 plays with Hargrove getting the touchdown on a 5-yard run. Johnson added the two point conversion to tie the game.
CFCA struck minutes later on a 35-yard scoring pass from Johnson to Jake Wells, and the Lancers took that lead into halftime. Griffin Christian came right back in the third quarter, getting a 50-yard touchdown run from CJ Lewis to tie the game. With Hargrove out of the game with cramps, CFCA was unable to move the football, but its defense stood up to the challenge of stopping the Crusaders' offense.
The second half was delayed at least 10 times with numerous players battling cramps. Griffin Christian played most of the second half with only one substitute available because of injuries to two players but hung tough, forcing three second-half turnovers.
Griffin Christian could not move the ball in overtime, actually losing 6 yards in its four plays from the 25.
