MACON - Georgia's recruiting class reported to campus on Monday, minus one signee who will not be coming.
Head coach Mark Richt confirmed that one player is "not gonna make it." Richt did not want to identify him, but he is receiver Gilbert Johnson, a three-star prospect from Homestead, Fla., according to Dawgs247.com.
Safety Shattle Fenteng, a junior college prospect, is due to report in July, according to Richt.
Johnson was not expected to figure into the plans this year at receiver, so it's not a huge long in the short term. Georgia looks to be pretty deep this year, especially with news that Malcolm Mitchell is looking good in summer workouts.
Mitchell missed basically all of last year with an ACL injury, then had his spring practice cut short the first week with an unspecified leg injury. But Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason said Mason has looked great in offseason workouts.
"Malcolm is running sprints with us, and he's kicking everyone's butt," Mason said of Mitchell.
UGA's athletic trainers are being cautious with Mitchell, according to Mason.
"He's about 100 percent as you go, I think they're just not ready to release him yet, they're just holding on to him a little bit longer," Mason said. "But I just talked to him yesterday and said, 'Hey man when can we start doing some throwing?' And he did some cutting in the spring. So I think the doctors are really just trying to make sure his knee is ready to go, and taking care of how they train him and how they run."
A little bit further behind, but still on track for the season, is receiver Justin Scott-Wesley. He tore his ACL a month after Mitchell last year. Richt is confident that Scott-Wesley will be ready for the season.
"He's still got a ways to go, but he's got more time," Richt said. "I don't think there's any restrictions on what he can do this summer. It's just a matter of him getting more comfortable as he goes. But we do expect him to be able to play Game 1."
Scott-Wesley is facing a one-game suspension after a marijuana arrest last October, after his injury. The team is not confirming the suspension yet.
