ATHENS - The Georgia football program has learned the hard way never to be satisfied with its tailback situation. So the Bulldogs continue to load up for what it hopes is the next wave of talented ball-carriers.
Nick Chubb, considered by many experts to be the top tailback recruit in Georgia, committed on Tuesday to the Bulldogs. The rising senior at Cedartown High School is rated a four-star recruit by the 247sportscomposite.
"Number one a good kid. A kid that has worked really hard to get where he is," said Chad Simmons, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com. "As a running back a very physical guy. ... He's really a downhill kid, runs well behind his pads, has a natural low center of gravity. He's tough to tackle. That whole YAC thing, yards after carry."
Chubb joins Sony Michel, a five-star recruit from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who committed in April. The pair would be freshman on the 2014 Georgia team, when Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall would be juniors. The team also has three incoming freshmen tailbacks, along with another (Tramel Terry) who can play receiver and running back.
Never miss a local story.
That may seem overloaded, but after losing players to dismissal (Isaiah Crowell), transfer for playing time (Ken Malcome), transfer for discipline (Washaun Ealey) and academics (Caleb King), the Bulldogs are leaving nothing to chance. It also bears pointing out that Gurley and Marshall will be draft-eligible after the 2014 season.
Simmons thinks neither Chubb or Michel will be concerned about the depth chart and look elsewhere. They'll be willing to be part of a tailback-by-committee.
"Georgia showed last year it works," Simmons said.
