The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles are going back to the A-Sun tournament championship game for the second straight year, and this time, the Eagles will face top seed and host Mercer.
Florida Gulf Coast earned that trip – they lost to Belmont in last year’s title game – with a 72-58 victory Friday night over Stetson. Sherwood Brown scored his team’s first nine points and finished with 18 to lead a balanced Eagles attack, which had three other players in double figures: Bernard Thompson (12), Chase Fieler (11) and Eric McKnight (10).
“I’m really thankful to have this guy Sherwood Brown on our team,” Florida Gulf Coast head coach Andy Enfield said. “It was like we were uptight at the start of the game. Sherwood played great (Friday) and really carried us. Once we settled down and got into a flow, we played very well.”
Brown was the conference’s player of the year during the regular season. The Eagles improved to 23-10.
“I was just trying to do what I could to win the game,” Brown said. “I knew they would get over that. Once they did, we started playing better.”
Adam Pegg led Stetson (15-16) with 17 points while Chris Perez had 15.
