Head coach Donald Pittman and his staff still have to do a little waiting and seeing, but Fort Valley State is a bit ahead of schedule after National Signing Day.
The Wildcats signed 13 players as of early Wednesday evening with more expected Thursday and Friday.
The Wildcats inked 11 on signing day a year ago, the class highlighted by Peach County running back Travis Richmond. A few of that first-day class never made it into uniform.
They added five more within a few days, including offensive lineman Brandon Baker, who worked his way into the rotation.
Never miss a local story.
That went with a list of early signees in 2011, including quarterback W.J. McAllister of Warner Robins.
FVSU will again fill the class out in the coming days.
“We have some we’re waiting on,” Pittman said. “We’ll get them in the morning. We’ll probably go the same way. And we’ve always got some we’ll wait on.”
The Wildcats had their annual take from Middle Georgia again this year, and got the right mix of positions from that group.
Running back Jonquez Sanders of Taylor County is transferring from Eastern Arizona (junior) College. He had 11 carries for 84 yards in three games last season, according to the National Junior College Athletic Association website.
He was recruited a year ago by Western Carolina and Jacksonville State, among others. Sanders was a state-caliber sprinter in high school.
Former Taylor County teammates wideout Aaron Chappell and defensive lineman Lawrence Mathews also signed with the Wildcats. Chappell and Mathews were honorable mention All-Middle Georgia in 2011.
FVSU added Peach County defensive lineman Lamont Wray, a third-team all-area selection, as well as Mary Persons offensive lineman Jay Beckham.
Glenn Hills running back Germaine Tait is a 5-foot-10, 2-10-pounder will help bolster the backfield.
“The surprises would be this,” Pittman said. “We got two transfers from The Citadel, and we have three Hope Scholars.”
Running back Seth Hill and defensive end Marvon Danzie of Grovetown in Augusta traded the military school for the Wildcats.
“They made their first year of boot camp,” Pittman said with a chuckle. “And they had enough of it.”
