WARNER ROBINS -- The city saw a rash of surprise candidates in the final day of qualifying for the Nov. 5 election, including a new mayoral contender.
Eva K. Folse, 66, turned the competition for the mayor’s seat into a six-way race. Folse, who had not previously announced her bid for the seat, will face former Councilman Mike Brashear, Robins Air Force Base employee Chuck Chalk, Councilman Daron Lee, former Public Works Director Joe Musselwhite and former firefighter Randy Toms in the general election.
She could not immediately be reached for comment.
Mayor Chuck Shaheen is running for the Post 1 at-large council seat rather than seeking re-election. He was joined Friday by Jeffrey Walker, 52. Also in the race are current Post 1 Councilman Mike Daley and Charlie Scott, who qualified earlier this week.
Never miss a local story.
Walker, who is retired, is making his third try at winning a council seat.
“I’m just looking forward to working hard for the people on the campaign trail,” he said.
Also Friday, Clifford Holmes Jr., 70, qualified to reclaim the Post 5 seat he left four years ago to run in a failed bid for mayor. Liberty Kovach, 25, also qualified for Post 5 on Friday. Richard Weldon qualified for the seat earlier in the week.
Holmes said he considered running for mayor and had not announced his intentions to qualify for council because he wasn’t certain.
“I just wanted to make sure we get our fair shake in Post 5,” he said. “If I could have thought about it for another week I would have, but it had to be today.”
Kovach has a bakery business she operates out of her home, and she sells her products at the International City Farmers Market. After serving on the market’s board, she said, she decided she wanted to go further.
“I just thought the council should get someone younger with a new perspective on things,” she said.
Perry had no new qualifiers Friday, which means the mayor and three council members up for re-election will be unopposed.
