ATLANTA -- The state Legislature will soon consider a proposal to dissolve Payne City into Macon-Bibb County.
Joining the larger government seems to be the will of Payne’s own government, said state Sen. David Lucas, D-Macon, the author of Senate Bill 11.
“The assets, property and legal rights and obligations of the city shall devolve upon the governing authority of Macon-Bibb County,” reads the main sentence in the tiny three-paragraph bill.
Payne voters rejected consolidation in 2012 by a handful of votes.
Because the bill only affects one city and county, if a majority of the area’s lawmakers agree to it, the full Legislature is likely to defer to their opinion and pass the bill.
