Facing strong opposition at Monday’s Appropriations Committee meeting, Macon City Councilman Erick Erickson told the committee he thinks Macon Mayor Robert Reichert should be allowed to spend up to $5,000 without council approval.
He said loosening the restriction would allow the mayor to focus on the city’s future, and Erickson even suggested adding a “sunset provision” so the ordinance would expire after six months if the council didn’t extend it.
Opponents, including council members Elaine Lucas, Virgil Watkins and Tom Ellington, said they were scared by the prospect of giving the mayor the power to spend without their approval. Erickson co-sponsored the ordinance with council members Nancy White and Larry Schlesinger. The committee tabled the measure.
