ATLANTA — Three Georgia colleges have received more than $1 million in federal grants for college counseling and admissions programs.
The colleges are: Mercer University in Macon, Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta and Atlanta Metropolitan College. They are part of more than $47 million in grants to institutions in 44 states and Puerto Rico.
The grants are for TRIO Educational Opportunity Centers, which aim to increase the number of students in college by helping students navigate the often daunting task of finding financial aid and enrolling in programs.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says the program is “making an essential contribution to meeting” President Barack Obama’s goal of having the highest percentage of college graduates in the world by the end of the decade.
