The Jones County school board named retired Superintendent Billy Mathews as its choice for interim superintendent for the 2010-11 school year.
Board member Deloras Moon said Thursday by law the board must wait 14 days after notifying the public before it can vote.
The board plans to officially select Mathews on May 11.
Mathews retired from the Jones County school system about five years ago and had been working for the Georgia Department of Education helping failing schools make Adequate Yearly Progress goals, she said.
“He went from us to the state and got experience and when we were looking for an interim, he was willing to come and help for a year,” Moon said. “He’s very familiar with our county and what our issues are.”
About six or eight people applied for the interim position but Moon said after board members talked to Mathews, they didn’t consider anyone else for the job.
Moon said the board plans to offer Mathews a one year contract that would start June 1.
He replaces interim Superintendent Mike Newton, who is leaving to take a job in Jasper County.
