Wally Shaw, director of the band program at Houston County High School, was named Georgia Music Educator of the Year during a Friday ceremony at the annual Georgia Music Educators Association conference in Savannah.
The association gives out the award annually, and Shaw was nominated by several members of the group.“His dedication to our organization and to his students stood out for me,” said Bernadette Scruggs, GMEA president and a member of the selection committee.
Scruggs said Shaw was willing to volunteer in leadership positions for the organization, including hosting auditions for the all-state high school band. Shaw has served as GMEA District 11 chairman and Georgia All-State Concert Band coordinator for the past eight years.
Shaw arrived at Houston County High when it opened in 1991 and has developed the program into one of the top band programs in the state.
