Georgia had 40 teachers achieve National Board Certification this year, according to a Tuesday news release from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The state ranks ninth for the total number of teachers overall who achieved the certification with 2,505 teachers. The state’s top five school districts for having the most National Board Certified teachers are Gwinnett County with 238, Fulton County with 202, Cobb County with 136, Dekalb with 85 and Chatham County with 78. Bibb has 49 national board certified teachers including two to achieve the certification in 2008. Those teachers are Donna Thompson and Daphney Grant, according to the NBPTS Web site.
Houston County has 21 nationally board certified. Monroe has eight, Peach has four and Jones schools has two with the certification.
Research suggests the certification positively impacts student achievement and teacher retention, the news release said. Some teachers who earn the certification also get a salary increase. For more information visit www.nbpts.org
