The customer is always right — until she hops on the sandwich-shop checkout counter and starts flinging paper cups. Or when her old man, in a rage, heaves the cookie display at a server. That’s what happened July 4 at the Subway in the Gray Highway Wal-Mart, according to the bruised, insulted sandwich server and a Bibb County sheriff’s report.
The server, 25, told The Cop Shop that the female customer was scowling the moment she and her beau walked in.
“I’m just being cordial,” the server said, adding that she had just opened a new package of lettuce. “I start to put the veggies on their sandwiches, and before I could get to it, she said, ‘That lettuce looks brown!’ I said, ‘Ma’am, I just opened this bag, fresh.’ She said, ‘Well it looks brown to me?’”
The woman then told the server, “They teach you to argue with the customers?”
The server explained to her manager what happened, that she had just put out fresh lettuce.
The manager said he had seen her do so, but the man with the angry female customer was not appeased.
He told the server, “No, you’re just being a rude-a-- ... b----.”
When he said that, the server said, “I lost my temper and I said some choice words to him as well. ... As soon as I did, his wife, she’s threatening me, she’s saying, ‘I’m gonna beat your a--.’ ... They’re telling me I’m broke because I work at Subway. ... Then she jumps on top of the counter on her hands and knees and she throws a handful of coffee cups at me. ... Then her husband threw the cookie display at me.”
There were four-dozen cookies in the rack. The display struck the server and bruised her leg and hand.
The upset pair then left with only one sandwich.
“Take this for your trouble,” the manager had told them as they marched out.
The server described the couple as “hillbillies.” She said, “The guy looked like he hadn’t had a haircut in months, or cut his hair himself. The woman, for her to keep calling me broke, her teeth were broken off in the front.”
