Bibb County sheriff’s investigators on Tuesday continued their probe of reported Saturday night gunfire from the balcony of a house overlooking Lake Tobesofkee.
Three fishermen, one of them a teenage boy, told deputies they had been fishing in a cove northwest of Sandy Beach, below Moseley Dixon Road.
Sometime after 10 p.m., they said a man on the balcony of a house on Lotus Point Drive fired seven or eight rifle shots in their direction, Sheriff David Davis said.
The trio promptly returned to shore and reported the episode to authorities. Deputies then went to the house, where a man “spoke to us through the glass doors,” a deputy’s write-up of the incident noted. “When asked to come out or to open the doors and speak with us he declined and stated to come back in the morning when he has spoken with his lawyer.”
The man then switched off his lights and walked away.
The fishermen couldn’t describe the shooter, and because it wasn’t clear who may have opened fire, Davis said the deputies’ hands were tied to further pursue the matter.
“When we do get the probable cause on ... the person or persons that did fire the shots, we will make a criminal case,” Davis said Tuesday.
The sheriff said the actions the deputies took or didn’t take are being examined.
“It’s regrettable that on the night that this happened that there wasn’t more follow-up,” Davis said.
