A man claiming to be a law enforcement officer is believed to have gone on a crime spree in Bibb and Crawford counties.
Deputies took 35-year-old Michael Quincy Godwin into custody while responding to a burglary in progress in the 2900 block of Salem Church Road, according to a news release from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
Godwin was taken to the hospital for an undisclosed reason, and charges are pending, the release stated.
The GBI is assisting deputies in the ongoing investigation after a white man, who was wearing dark clothes and a dark hat, entered a home shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1700 block of U.S. 80 East.
Occupants said the man claimed to be with law enforcement before he fled to a neighbor’s unoccupied house and took a white Chevrolet pickup, according to a news release from Sheriff Lewis Walker.
Deputies later received a call from another nearby resident whose car and antique vehicles had been entered and moved around.
A white Ford van that had been stolen out of Bibb County was left in the driveway, which was also in the 1700 block of U.S. 80.
Deputies later found the stolen Chevy pickup wrecked on Salem Church Road, where the Salem Primitive Baptist Church and a garage at a different address were burglarized.
The suspect was believed to have stolen a 12-gauge shotgun from one of the locations.
Anyone with information about the cases is asked to call the GBI at 478-987-4545 or the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office at 478-836-3116.
