About three weeks before Christmas, a Macon woman accused of shoplifting allegedly abandoned her infant in a Wal-Mart shopping cart.
The woman, 25-year-old Ashley Lynn Heichelbech, was indicted Tuesday on charges of criminal attempt to commit cruelty to children and theft by shoplifting.
A loss prevention officer at the Wal-Mart on Macon’s Harrison Road allegedly spotted a woman on surveillance video stealing merchandise at about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 2, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office report.
Two loss prevention officers approached her as she was leaving and asked her to “step into a room” and wait for deputies to arrive. The woman left on foot, headed toward Chambers Road, leaving her 1-year-old son behind, according to the report.
At the time of the report, the identity of the child and his mother were unknown. The infant was taken to a foster home, according to the report.
County jail records show Heichelbech, of Lafayette Drive, was arrested the following day and has been held on $6,350 bond.
The indictment, filed in Bibb County Superior Court, alleges she took “assorted women’s and infant’s clothing” and other goods.
The document also alleges she abandoned her baby “to avoid being apprehended.”
