The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning Tuesday about a phone scam going on in the midstate.
According to a news release, the sheriff’s office has received several reports of a caller claiming to be a Bibb County deputy who demands the victim pay a fine for a warrant, ticket or other court-related matters.
The caller then asks the victim to pay the fine over the phone by providing credit card or other financial information.
The current scam uses an Augusta-area phone number, and the caller has been using the names of several retired Bibb County deputies.
In March, the sheriff’s office arrested three people on deposit account fraud charges for operating a similar phone scam.
Anyone who receives such a call shouldn’t give any financial or other information to the caller. Anyone receiving such a call is asked to contact the Bibb sheriff’s office at 478-751-7500.
