No charges will be filed against a Bibb County sheriff’s deputy who shot a man during a traffic stop in Macon’s Village Green neighborhood.
Sgt. Jeffrey Scott Johnson shot 54-year-old Walter Smith after a traffic stop at the intersection of Bloomfield Road and Leone Drive on March 20.
A witness saw Smith pull a gun.
Grand jurors returned an indictment Tuesday charging Smith with felony obstruction, aggravated assault, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and misdemeanor obstruction.
The group took no action against Johnson, according to the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office.
Smith allegedly accelerated while Scott’s arm and torso were still inside his Ford Expedition.
He also failed to show his hands to the officer when asked, according to the indictment, filed in Bibb County Superior Court.
Johnson and another deputy had been patrolling the area because of complaints about speeders.
