Bibb County grand jurors indicted a 24-year-old Macon mother Tuesday in the May 23 death of her 3-year-old son.
Jameshia Desiree Reid, of Mutual Avenue, is charged with malice murder, felony murder and cruelty to children in the death of Jakarie Reid, according to an indictment filed Tuesday in Bibb County Superior Court.
The indictment alleges Reid caused her son “cruel and excessive physical and mental pain” by striking him repeatedly on his torso and legs. She also is accused of inflicting blunt force trauma to the toddler’s head.
The boy was rushed to The Medical Center of Central Georgia May 22 after he stopped breathing. Reid initially was jailed on a child cruelty charge, but the charge was upgraded to murder May 23 after Jakarie died.
Police sketches of a broken coat hanger and aquarium fish net seized from the house matched some of the boy’s wounds, according to police.
Neighbors told police they could hear the little boy yelling from as far as a block away from Reid’s home as he was being beaten and a woman hollering for him to put on his clothes.
Reid has told police Jakarie passed out and might have swallowed hazardous chemicals.
At a June court hearing, her lawyer argued that there’s no evidence that Reid abused Jakarie.
The boy suffered from a heart condition which could have contributed to his death, the lawyer argued.
Reid is being held at the Bibb County jail without bond, according to jail records.
