Forsyth City Councilman Desi Surtane Hansford pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Thursday in U.S. District Court to charges of soliciting a bribe. Hansford was arrested by the FBI. He and fellow Councilman James Edward Calloway were indicted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office March 12 for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a company that was seeking to renew a contract with the city. Hansford’s attorney, Charles Cox, said Thursday he’s not prepared to comment on the case. No subsequent court dates have been set for Hansford, who is currently free on a $10,000 unsecured bond. Cox said he didn’t know whether Hansford would resign his seat from the council. Calloway, whose indictment hearing Thursday was delayed after his attorney became unavailable, presented his formal resignation to the City Council during Tuesday’s meeting.
