Illegal cell phones triggered a fight at Telfair State Prison on Monday night, leading to three inmates and a staff member receiving medical attention, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Two dormitories were placed on lockdown at the prison, located in Helena.
While cell phones can be viewed as a useful tool for an inmate to use to contact friends and family, inmates also use cell phones to commit additional crimes and carry out gang activity, according to a news release issued Tuesday.
Georgia law prohibits inmates from possessing telecommunications devices inside correctional facilities. It’s also illegal for anyone to give the devices to inmates.
