The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office charged a couple with first degree arson after they allegedly set fire to their apartment Friday afternoon, according to a sheriff’s report.
Investigators arrested Aaron Christopher Gaines, 41, and Adrienne Elaine Gaines, 43, and charged them with setting a fire inside their apartment in the 5500 block of Riverside Drive. The fire caused smoke damage to adjoining units, the report said.
The apartment manager told investigators that Adrienne Gaines and another female were spotted in the vicinity when the fire was reported and that the couple made no attempt to extinguish it. A maintenance man attempted to put out the fire but was overcome with the heat and smoke. The report said Aaron Gaines was sitting outside in his vehicle and left when the apartment manager arrived.
The manager told investigators that the Gaineses were attempting to get out of their lease for some time. The couple has two children, a 14-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old daughter, who were turned over to DFACS, the report stated.
