The boyfriend of a Centerville woman he shot accidentally in the chest Aug. 2 has been charged with reckless conduct, police said.
Jacob Aaron Riley, 19, is free on a $2,500 bond. His girlfriend, Madison Whaley, remains hospitalized at The Medical Center of Central Georgia but is expected to recover, said Centerville Police Chief Sid Andrews. Whaley was in stable condition Friday, he said.
Riley was moving into Whaley’s home and was attempting to make his semi-automatic 9mm safe when Whaley was accidentally shot in the process, Andrews said. Riley had released the magazine from the firearm and then pulled the trigger assuming the gun was unloaded, Andrews said. The firearm discharged, and Whaley was struck in the chest, the chief said.
“It’s no different than a car accident,” Andrews said. “It’s an accident, but there was negligence there ... a disregard for gun safety.”
Andrews urged the public to take a gun safety course before owning and possessing a firearm.
