The GBI’s Perry office has identified Justin Michael Taylor, 23, as the inmate who died following a fight with two inmates, aged 27 and 24, at Central State Prison on Monday.
Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Taylor, from Soperton, was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. Monday after a fight at the prison on Fulton Mill Road in west Bibb County. Autopsy results are expected Wednesday evening from the GBI’s Macon crime lab.
Jones said he expects the cause of death will be trauma. In a GBI statement, assistant Special Agent in Charge Craig Rotter said no weapons were used in the fight. The other inmates’ names are not being released “due to the ongoing investigation and possible pending charges,” the statement said.
Rotter said Taylor was being held on a probation violation charge following an earlier conviction of burglary. The Georgia Department of Corrections website said Taylor was sentenced to 20 years on a burglary charge and 10 years on a criminal interference with government property charge, both out of Camden County. He was released in September, according to the site.
The Georgia Department of Corrections regularly asks for GBI investigations of deaths inside prisons, the GBI statement said.
