A five-hour police standoff in Milledgeville ended Sunday when the man released his hostage and surrendered at 7:15 a.m, the Milledgeville Police Department said in a statement.
Police were told before they arrived that shots had been fired.
Police said they took the gunman, Robert Allen Marchione, 21, to the Oconee Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. His hostage, a woman, was treated by paramedics on the scene and released.
Police got involved about 2:30 a.m. Sunday with a call about a man with a gun at 732 Matheson Road. Milledgeville police and detectives joined a pair of Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies at the scene, where they were told Marchione was barricaded inside the house and holding the woman hostage, police said in a statement.
Milledgeville Police Capt. Dray Swicord began negotiating with Marchione.
More officers from the police department and sheriff’s office responded, along with the Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team, Milledgeville firefighters and paramedics.
Milledgeville police said more information could be released Monday.
The statement did not say how the incident began, how Marchione and the woman are related or whether any guns were fired.
