A 57-year-old homeless man was arrested Tuesday night after witnesses identified him as the man who stole a wheelchair-bound man’s wallet outside the Dempsey Apartments on Cherry Street, according to Macon police.
The wheelchair-bound man told police that a man was panhandling outside the apartment building just before 10 p.m. When reaching into his pocket, the wheelchair-bound man accidentally dropped his wallet, according to a police news release.
The homeless man, later identified as Leroy Harris, snatched the wallet from the ground before the other man could pick it up. A witness followed Harris and later alerted police to his whereabouts, according to the release.
Harris was detained at the corner of Third and Plum streets. He was charged with robbery by snatching, according to the release.
He is being held at the Bibb County jail on $9,000 bond, according to jail records.
