Bibb County deputies arrested a man who allegedly fired shots from his vehicle at another vehicle Thursday night.
According to a sheriff’s report, deputies arrested Jose Antonio Mendoza, 22, of the 5200 block of Bloomfield Road and charged him with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property after he allegedly fired at another vehicle.
A deputy found Mendoza at an apartment complex after he called 911 about a possible armed robbery at the Chambers Cove Apartments.
The deputy wrote in his report that a lookout was issued for a dark blue Crown Victoria involved in a drive-by shooting, similar to the one driven by Mendoza. The deputy saw a handgun and money on the front seat of the car.
Mendoza told the deputy a man approached him to borrow his phone, then struck Mendoza on the chin with an unknown object.
A witness at the scene told investigators that she thought Mendoza’s car was the same one that had been involved in a drive-by shooting earlier that evening. Mendoza matched the description of the shooter from that incident, the report stated.
The deputies placed Mendoza and a passenger in his vehicle into custody when Mendoza started to shout he didn’t do anything. When informed that investigators were going to perform a gun-powder residue test on him, Mendoza told deputies he fired his gun during the robbery attempt.
The man whom Mendoza allegedly shot at arrived at the scene and showed where the bullet struck his vehicle.
