Dublin police officers have not been able to recover the bullet that struck a Wal-Mart employee Tuesday morning as he was gathering shopping carts in the parking lot.
Chief Wayne Cain said Bruce Payne, 43, of Montrose, was shot in the hip and is in stable condition at a local hospital.
Several employees of the Wal-Mart, located at 2423 U.S. 80 West, were in the parking lot about 2 a.m. Tuesday when they heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot, Cain said.
Payne felt a sting, turned to run and fell to the ground when he realized he’d been shot, according to police.
Never miss a local story.
Cain said the shot came from across the highway, about 200 yards away, and went straight through Payne before ricocheting off a store wall. Because officers haven’t recovered the bullet, they don’t know what caliber of gun was used.
Police think the shot was a stray bullet, and Cain said it doesn’t appear that the shooter was trying to shoot anyone.
