A vacant house erupted in flames at about 9 a.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of Trinity Place off Emery Highway in Macon.
A witness reported seeing three young people, possibly juveniles, leaving the house at 896 Trinity Place just before smoke appeared, said District Chief J.R. Malcom of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze but the small wood-frame house sustained major damage in what’s believed to be a case of arson, Malcom said.
He urged property owners to secure vacant structures and remove contents such as old newspapers and furniture that could feed flames in the event of a fire.

Malcom said there was no evidence to suggest someone was trying to warm themselves in the empty house.
The Macon Police Department is investigating the suspicious blaze.
