The Flint River Fellowship of Christian Athletes has two big fundraisers coming up with two big names attached to them.
The Flint River FCA 4-Person Golf Scramble will be April 13 at Houston Lake Country Club with special guest former college football coach Bobby Bowden.
The event has an 11:30 a.m. check-in/lunch and a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch, gift bag, snacks, a complimentary ticket to the Spring Fundraiser and individual, team and door prize opportunities are included with registration.
Daryl McElwain, area director of Flint River FCA, said Bowden, who coached at Florida State University and has a career record of 377-129-4, has a long-standing commitment to FCA. Involved with FCA since 1963, Bowden presents the FCA Player of the Year trophy at the national championship game ever year.
Bowden has made other appearances in Middle Georgia on behalf of the Flint River FCA. In 2012, he was the guest speaker at the annual spring fundraiser and recounted a story of Pablo Lopez, who was an FSU starting tackle when he was shot and killed in 1986.
At the team meeting immediately after Lopez’s death, Bowden said that he asked his team, “Where is Pablo?” and spoke to them about being ready for death and looking toward the future.
“The whole goal of life should be preparing for eternity,” Bowden said that evening.
The incident was a major influence on his team. One of his assistant coaches at the time, Mark Richt, also has repeated the story many times in reference to his faith in Christ.
On April 14, the Flint River FCA will be holding its eighth annual spring fundraiser, “A Night at the Ball Park, featuring Sid Bream, a two-time National League champion and former Atlanta Braves first baseman.
General admission tickets are $25, and doors will open at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. A 5:30 p.m. meet-and-greet ticket for $60 includes general admission and a mini home plate and a photo with Bream.
There are several sponsorship levels available for the golf tournament and tickets are on sale now for the Night at the Ball Park.
