PERRY -- The Perry Junior League 15-and-under all-star team qualified for the Dixie League Softball World Series.
The team, coached by husband and wife Joel and Kristi Rich, will play its first tournament game at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Virginia. The games are being held in Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
In the Belles division, the players are between the ages of 12 and 15. During the regular season, the team was undefeated.
“They have come together and really jelled,” Joel Rich said.
Two travel ball tournaments and a state championship have prepared the team to represent Georgia in the double-elimination tournament.
“Out here, we practice defense,” Joel Rich said. “The coaches took the girls through several drills, doing some work with both the infield and the outfield.”
Taylor Boynton, Jordan Boynton, Kendall Nutgrass, Olivia Hardy, Kaitlyn Albritton, Hannah Otto, Ashley Gidney, Savannah Osborne, Ashlyn Bernhard, Courtney Thompson, Logan Stinson and Elana Hooper are part of the team. Bernhard, who is a sophomore at Perry, said she was looking forward to getting to the travel. She had never been to Louisiana before.
“I’m excited about just going and getting the experience of playing in the world series,” she said.
Hardy, although nervous about playing in a tournament this large, likes the team’s chances.
“I think once we get out there, we’ll all calm down,” said Hardy, who is 14 and is a freshman at Perry.
