Centerville police are among the Middle Georgia agencies participating in a national campaign that urges people to drop off expired and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction.
According to a federal Drug Enforcement Administration news release, the nationwide prescription drug initiative called “Take-Back” is scheduled for Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The impetus for the event is the problem of prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings and overdoses, with the majority of abused drugs taken from family and friends, the release stated.
Also, many people don’t realize the potential safety and health hazards of flushing unused medications down the toilet or throwing them away, the release stated.
The Centerville Police Department is among the agencies on a list of collection sites that is updated daily. The list can be accessed at www.dea.gov.
Some of the other Middle Georgia agencies on the list as of Wednesday include the Milledgeville Police Department, the Oconee Drug Task Force and the Thomaston Police Department.
