A lightning strike caused a fire early Thursday at a Houston County home near Warner Robins, a fire official said.
Deputy Fire Chief Bill Smith said Friday that lightning struck the home at 206 Echeconnee Lane during a thunderstorm that passed through the area between late Wednesday night and about 1 a.m. Thursday.
The fire, called in shortly before 1 a.m., was limited to the utility room, Smith said.
Resident Linwood Gantt Jr., 62, told a sheriff’s deputy he was awakened by a loud noise during the thunderstorm with heavy rain and lightning, according to a Houston County sheriff’s incident report.

Gantt told the deputy he smelled something that he suspected was an electrical fire and found his home on fire, the report said. He escaped without injury.
