A Houston County Fire Department water tanker overturned Friday, sprawling across Glen Oaks Road at its intersection with Lake Joy Drive.
Firefighter William Barnawell, 35, of Warner Robins, was transported to The Medical Center of Central Georgia as a precaution because of the extensive damage to the tanker, said Georgia State Patrol trooper Derrek Lumsden.
The tanker was totaled, the trooper said.
Barnawell was traveling south on Lake Joy Drive when he went off the road, overcorrected and lost control of the tanker, Lumsden said. The tanker came to rest across Glen Oaks Road.
Never miss a local story.
Lake Joy Drive was shut down in the immediate vicinity for about an hour after the 11:17 a.m. accident, mostly from emergency vehicles called to the scene, the trooper said. Houston County sheriff’s deputies detoured traffic, he said.
Barnawell was on his way to refill the tanker with gasoline when the accident occurred, Lumsden said.
