Macon has had rich ties to the music industry for a long time, and that connection is getting an upgrade.
During the month of March, NewTown Macon and Shadow Sound Studio will be accepting entries for a CD that will highlight Middle Georgia artists.
The idea came from a similar effort in Austin, Texas, which NewTown’s president, Josh Rogers, saw while he was attending a conference there, said Nicole Kubas, NewTown Macon’s director of place.
“We thought it was a way to get Macon’s music scene back up,” Kubas said, noting recent “momentum” already in place for Macon’s musicians to follow in the footsteps of legends such as Otis Redding and Little Richard.
A panel of judges will listen to and rate the entries, and the top 10 tracks will be professionally recorded at Shadow Sound’s studio in downtown Macon.
Kubas said the judges’ names would not be released for now.
“Basically, they’re local and regional professionals that are in the music industry,” she said.
Entries should be submitted digitally at sonicbids.com/newtownmacon. CDs will not be accepted. Tracks do not need to be professionally recorded before entry. Studio Town will provide production and additional instruments needed for the recording of chosen tracks.
“We’re really trying to get artists that don’t necessarily have the chance to get tracks recorded,” Kubas said.
Other artists might be looking to record a previously unrecorded track, she said, or gain more exposure based on a second recording of a song.
Submissions will be accepted from March 1 at midnight to March 31 at 11:59 p.m.
