A Macon woman driving north on southbound Interstate 475 died Sunday morning when the SUV she was in slammed head-on into an 18-wheeler.
About 5 a.m., Abatha Jolley, 32, apparently took a wrong turn onto the freeway’s southbound lanes from Eisenhower Parkway, said deputy Bibb County coroner Ronnie Miley.
She didn’t go even a mile before colliding with the big rig.
Jolley, who was alone in another woman’s late-model Volvo SUV, died at the crash scene near the Columbus Road overpass at the edge of the Macon State College campus.
The tractor-trailer she struck was from Wisconsin. Its driver, who wasn’t hurt, said Jolley swerved to avoid the wreck, but the trucker veered the same way as the vehicles closed in on one another, Miley said.
The SUV was smashed beneath the front of the truck’s cab, Miley said.
Traffic in the area was clogged for hours.
