Vineville Avenue is expected to be blocked all day Tuesday as repairs are made to a sinkhole that opened up Monday afternoon.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office reports detours will be in effect for both the morning and evening rush hours.
Carlos Taylor was driving east on Vineville Avenue when one of his wheels went into the hole. He said the cars in front of him went over a hump, but there was no hump when he got there.
“We stayed calm and got out safely,” Taylor said. “It continued to sink.”
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said inbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Desoto Place. Outbound traffic on Vineville Avenue is being detoured at Pio Nono Avenue.
Commuters should expect delays due to the detours, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Residents in the immediate area of the sinkhole would be accommodated, the sheriff’s office said. The Georgia Department of Transportation estimates the road would be closed through Tuesday..
Reportedly the size of a compact car, the sinkhole is in a lane headed toward downtown Macon.
