A 12-year-old girl playing in the Oconee River was swept away and drowned Wednesday night near the riverwalk in Milledgeville.
Tomeia Flowers went under about 6:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m., said Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Ken Garland.
“Her grandmother let her wade out there in about knee-deep water, and she lost her footing,” Garland said. “She couldn’t swim, and the current got her.”
Fire rescue units, Milledgeville police, Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies, Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency workers and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources aided in the search for the girl, who was found not far from where she went under.
“That water is so murky, you could be standing right beside something and not see it,” Garland said.
Baldwin County Coroner John Gonzalez said there have been at least three drownings in that spot near the Ga. 22 bridge in recent years.
“It’s terrible. Something should be done,” he said.
