The Houston County Fire Department battled a blaze Monday afternoon at Perry chicken processor Perdue Farms.
The call came in at 3:59 p.m., said Perry Fire Chief Joel Gray, and the fire departments in Perry and Warner Robins also sent trucks to the scene.
A Georgia State Patrol helicopter flew overhead with a firefighter inside to survey the scene and ensure the fire was out. Julie DeYoung, a Perdue Farms spokeswoman, said the fire was extinguished in just over an hour.
According to DeYoung, equipment on the exterior of the cooking plant caught fire. A high-temperature alarm sounded and employees were evacuated, with no injuries reported.
The processing plant and distribution center weren’t involved in the fire and continue to operate. But cooking plant employees were told not to return to work Tuesday.
DeYoung said an investigation will be conducted. She said the extent of damage to the cooking plant or the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
