A 24-year-old Fort Valley man died in a late Monday morning log-truck accident in Baldwin County on Ga. 22 east of Milledgeville.
Clayton Goolsby was in a Chevrolet pickup headed east as a log truck headed west from Sparta entered a curve near Stembridge Road, said Ken Garland, deputy coroner for Baldwin County.
The logs shifted, the trailer toppled over and the logs crashed down on Goolsby’s truck.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened about 10:57 a.m.
Crews had to hoist logs off the truck and cut into the vehicle to remove the victim, who was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m., Garland said.
The highway closed for about five hours Monday.
All charges are pending until the GSP’s collision reconstruction team’s investigation is complete.
Kim Dann, a postal delivery worker who said she witnessed the accident, told The Telegraph she saw the pickup approaching Stembridge Road.
Dann said she saw the logs come loose and hit the pickup and the road, followed by the trailer detaching from the cab and turning over. She said she had to drive her mail truck onto a resident’s driveway in order to avoid the logs herself.
Dann, who didn’t speak with investigators but did contact 911, said several people attempted to help the victim.
“All that weight falling over on that (pickup) truck, I knew there was no way that man survived,” she said.
