Clients of a tax service in Forsyth may be getting a call from the Georgia Department of Revenue after owners of the service were arrested on fraud charges.
Cathie Simpson, 45, and Donna Simpson, 40, were arrested Thursday after an investigation into fraudulent tax returns being filed by Legacy Tax Service at 1329 Juliette Road. The alleged fraud was done without the knowledge of the clients, said Allison Selman-Willis, spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. The clients could end up owing more taxes.
The Department of Revenue is going through tax returns of the clients and will be contacting the clients if there are issues found. In the meantime, anyone with questions can call the Department of Revenue at 877-423-6711 and choose option 2 when prompted.
Cathie Simpson is charged with three counts of making false statements and documents. Donna Simpson is charged with one count of the same. Both have been released on bond.
Selma-Willis said the two are related but she isn’t sure how.
The investigation began several months ago when a former employee of Legacy Tax Service told authorities her tax preparer number was being used to file fraudulent returns. The investigation was conducted jointly by the Department of Revenue and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Beverly Aldridge at 478-994-7043, ext. 232.
