A little boy wearing a wet diaper, shirt and slippers was found wandering near Mercer University Drive early Tuesday morning.
The 3-year-old, Nathan Ward, was walking around with his blue blanket outside Reise Chiropractic Center in the 4600 block of the road just before 9 a.m., according to news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. The center is west of the Columbus Road split.
Nichole Deloach, who has been working at the chiropractic center for 10 years, said it was the strangest thing that has ever happened there.
“The scary thing is, this is a very busy street and he could have gotten out into the street and gotten hit,” said Deloach, who called the sheriff’s office after one of the chiropractors spotted the tyke out the window.
The staff brought him inside and Deloach, who has a 19-month-old, had one diaper in her car and changed the boy.
“It was an extremely wet diaper,” she said. “I asked him, ‘Where’s your momma?’ and he’d point to next door.”
The child reportedly unlocked the door to his Pinewood Park apartment and got away while his mother, 32-year-old Jessica Ward, was sleeping, the release stated.
The apartment complex is next door to the clinic on the same side of Mercer University Drive, but there are fences around both, so the boy must have come through the front gate of the complex, Deloach said.
“It was very weird, but they said this was not the first time,” Deloach said.
One of the responding deputies was familiar with the child, she said.
The Department of Family and Children Services was notified of the incident.
