ATLANTA — U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss says he has removed a member of his staff after an investigation into a derogatory slur left on an Internet discussion over the rights of gays to serve in the U.S. military.
Chambliss said in a statement Thursday that the Senate Sergeant at Arms had concluded its investigation, and he responded immediately by removing a member of his staff.
The Georgia senator said he has called the blog’s author to apologize personally. Chambliss said that such comments are unacceptable.
The comment was posted on an Internet site dedicated to gay and lesbian issues. It was posted by a user identified as “Jimmy” who used a slur against gays.

The blog’s readers then traced the Internet Protocol address to the suburban Atlanta complex where Chambliss has an office.
